Season 2009 - 2010

The Second team concluded their season by losing to WelwynHatfield 3. Adam drew on one, Steve, Mod and Seb lost on two, three and four respectively whilst Raman Bedi made his long awaited debut and celebrated with a victory.

The Second team enjoyed a rather bizarre victory over Stevenage 4. The visitors defaulted one board in advance (Ruth Cook taking the 'victory'), board one failed to appear giving Mod an early night. Taran Jina won very nicely to take the only over the board point. Yogesh and Terry lost on three and four respectively. Two matches left against higher placed teams but both at Billy Lows Lane.

The First team appear to have secured another season in Division 2. Despite having just four players available for various reasons, the match stands at 2 - 2 with strong chances for Martin in his adjudication. Al won on 1 despite being material down, Mark dropped a piece and the game on 2, Martin stands two pawns up and Chris won on 4 courtesy of a dodgy sacrifice that lead to a whole queen advantage.

The Second team duly despatched St Albans 6 to defeat. Chris won with white on 1 against Ed Magee (master v pupil!), Steve has an interesting N+4Ps v B+3Ps endgame to complete. Seb lost to Jonathan Phillips, Tomas defeated Peter Baker in a reversal of the game a few weeks ago. Yogesh won on 5.

A chaotic match against Abbey Knights 2 ended in a 2.5 - 2.5 draw. Both teams defaulted on one board.

The home and away matches against Metropolitan will not take place. Both have been forfeited by the away team after difficulties in getting teams to the respective venues.

Potters Bar went to Willesden - and returned with a 0 - 4 reverse.

The First team match against Royston 2 is finely balanced at 1.5 - 1.5. Al won and Adam drew with Mark Topham's game going to adjudication and Martin's game to be continued. Kaz lost on five.

An unchanged Second team took the short trip to Barnet and came away with a 3 - 2 win. Three games finished within minutes, Chris won on 2 after being two pieces up in eleven moves, Adam then checkmated his opponent on 1 but Tomas lost on 5. Later Mod agreed a draw the exchange down. Steve failed to find a way through with Queen and two Rooks and also agreed a draw. A bit of a rest before our next match on 8th March.

The Second team finally played in 2010 travelling all the way to Royston (thanks for driving Tomas). Adam drew quickly on 1 and settled back to watch the rest of the team. Chris won in a tense battle against the clock finally mating with two queens. Steve lost on three in what looked like a good two bishops v knight and three pawns game. Mod won on four and Tomas on five.

After weeks of inactivity, the First team played Hoddesdon at Little Heath. The score currently stands at 2 - 2. Mark Uniacke won, Mark Topham and Adam Joelson drew with Alastair's game gong to adjudication.

Martin Likeman duly drew his adjourned game to give the first team a 3 - 2 win over St Albans 2.

The juniors of St Albans succumbed to a 4 - 1 defeat. Wins for Adam, Tomas and Terry, draws for Chris and Steve.

Despite benefitting from a default, the second team lost to University of Hertfordshire. The highlight was undoubtedly a good win for Seb.

A draw was achieved against a strong Enfield team. Chris lost on 1, Steve won 2 and Mod and Tomas both drew on 3 and 4 respectively.

Just a draw from Mod to show from our home match against Willesden. Steve came up against a strong ungraded player on board 1 whilst our youth wing of Jonathan and Seb played well but without success.

The long journey to Hammersmith saw a 1.5 - 2.5 reverse. Win for Mod though and draw for Steve.

We had to default our Division 2 match at Watford due to availability difficulties.

The Second team lost 2 - 3 to a strong Hemel 3 team. Adam won on 1 and we benefitted from a default on 5.

The Second team won their first match of the season by 4 - 1. Wins for Chris, Steve, Jonathan Davies and Seb Larsson.

The second match sees the First team at 2 - 2 against Bishop's Stortford with Mark Topham's game to be completed.

The first match of the season goes against us as the First Team lost by 1.5 - 3.5 at Little Heath.

Chess Club starts on Thursday 10th September 2009 - same time and place as last season.

The fixtures for the new season are now available. The First team continue in Herts Division 2. The Second team now play in the enlarged Division 6 where teams play each other once only. Potters Bar play in the renamed U140 Formula league.
