Mating the lone king

This week we are going to look at mating with two bishops against the lone king. If you are not confident about mating with K+R or K+Q please revise these before or after the meeting.

From this basic position the technique is to use waiting moves to force the king onto h8.

1 Kf6 Kh5 (forced) 2 Be6 (Black King must return to h6 after this waiting move) Kh6 3 Bg4 (cutting off the return to h5 and pushing the King towards the corner) Kh7  4 Kf7 (taking away g8) Kh6 5 Be3+ Kh7 6 Bf5+ Kh8 7 Bd4 mate. Beware of 4 ...Kh8 and stalemate through Bf5!

The mate with K+B+N is thankfully rare and can take up to 30 moves. The defender must try to avoid the corner controlled by the bishop. Take a look at this mate for homework and perhaps play it against the computer.

We started to look at analysing our games. Here is the game referred to in the text. You may have to click one the controls to start it playing straight though.
