The focus of the week is our UK Chess Challenge event. This is open to everyone regardless of whether they have already qualified for the Megafinal. If numbers permit we will run separate competitions but with prizes.

On Monday to Wednesday we will concentrate on activities appropriate to the level expected. Please be guided by the descriptions below. Typically, we would expect players to be able to handle two of the sessions.

Monday – for absolute beginners and players who have not received any formal training. We will cover the basics of development, some middlegame techniques and elementary endgame considerations.

Tuesday – we will explore some common opening ideas, more advanced middlegame themes and more complex endgame ideas.

Wednesday – the material here is aimed at the aspiring or current County player. We will look at games and gain an appreciation for planning and annotation.

On Thursday, we will concentrate on group and individual problem solving using a variety of methods including paper-based exercises and computer-based puzzles. We will also play games and look at practical considerations of tournament player ahead of the UK Chess Challenge event on Friday.

The emphasis of the week is fun!

Please provide a packed lunch. We will take regular breaks when squash will be available. Please ensure that we have a contact number.
