Season 2006 - 2007 (and earlier!)

Thanks to wins by Mark Uniacke, Ronan Kelly and Steve Dicks, the Second team have retained their place in Division 4 following a tense match with St Albans 3. The final score was 3.5 - 1.5

The Summer Tournament was won by Chris Cook (6/6), with Darius Faiz-Mahdavi second and John Yianni and Luc Cook third. Full details here

Due to the poor weather our scheduled Family Fun Day will be held over two dates. The Summer Tournament will continue as scheduled on Wednesday 30th May between 10:00am and 3:00pm. The other activities will take place on Monday 11th June starting at 5:00pm. This will include a mini chess competition, games for young ones and our cricket match against North Mymms. The First team retained their place in Division 2 with a 4 - 1 victory over Royston 2. Played 12 Won 3 Drew 4 Lost 5.

Medals galore for the club at the Potters Bar Lympix. Gold in Chess, 1500m and Football Penalties, Silver in Cribbage, Bronze in Cycling, 400m, Darts. More here

The Second team gained an invaluable 3 - 2 win over Letchworth 3. Depending on other results a win over St Albans may keep us in Division 4.

It's tense in Division 2 as we gain at least a draw against St Albans 2. However, other results may go against us leaving a tight finish to the season.

Kaz, Yvette and Jonathan showed the way as the Third team inflicted a 3 -2 defeat on Lower Red Lion 2.

After the good result last week, a  young team were on the wrong end of a 5 - 0 defeat by Barnet 3.

The Third team gained a creditable draw at WelwynHatfield. The youngest players came away with the wins, Yvette Cook on board 3 and Jonathan Davies on board 5. John Yianni scored the draw.

The First team match at Letchworth stands intriguingly poised at 1 - 1

The Second team have beaten Watford 4 by 3.5 - 1.5.

The Second team match with Hertford 3 stands at 2 - 2.

The First team scored a memorable result at Royston 2. The score stands at    1.5 - 2.5. Kaz Topham achieved a draw. Prospects are good in the remaining game.  (Won 1.5 - 3.5).

The First team are down 1 - 3 against St Albans 2.

The Third team completed a 5 - 0 victory over a young St Albans team

The U100 team lost to Letchworth despite a win for Mod and draw for John.

Unfortunately, Hemel had a mix up with their dates so we progress to the next round of the Russell.

The Christmas Fun Tournament took place on Thursday 21st December at Cunningham Hill School, St Albans. Adult and Junior results here. The Adult and Strong Juniors section was jointly won by Martin Walker and Jeremy Fraser-Mitchell who could not be separated even after two blitz games. Chris Mansfield won the Juniors and Beginners section. Thanks to everyone who took part.

The First Team drew 2.5 - 2.5 with Watford 2, the leaders of Division 2.

The Second team drew at St Albans 3.

19th October 2006. Reluctantly we have concluded that it is not feasible to maintain a team in Division 2 of the Middlesex League and have withdrawn. The disparity between the grading of teams in this division and the teams we could field was felt to be too wide to be fair to either our players or the opposition teams.

The First team have a finely balanced match with Letchworth. The current score is 1.5 - 1.5. Details here

Chris Cook, Michael Chesworth and Steve Dicks played in the Herts U125 team that lost to Essex at Wanstead. 

The Second team lost to a strong Hoddesdon 1 team with one match unresolved. Details here.

The First team stand 2 - 2 with Stevenage with the worst of the outstanding game. Details.

The draft fixtures for the Herts League have now been published. Subject to any changes the First team will play against St Albans 2, Stevenage 1, Letchworth 1, Hemel 2, Watford 2 and Royston 2. The Second team will be a division of eight clubs (compared with six last season). They play Hertford 3, Hemel 3, St Albans 3, Hoddesdon 1, Lower Red Lion 1, Letchworth 3 and Watford 4. The Third team are also in an eight team division and will play Barnet 3, Letchworth 6, Lower red Lion 2, St Albans 6, Stevenage 4, Bishop's Stortford 3 and Barnet 4. As will been seen there are some new teams this season.

Season 2006 - 2007

We were sorry to hear of the untimely death of Steve Weston on 27th June 2006 just short of his 53rd birthday. Steve was a long term friend of the club and played in our First, Second and Middlesex league teams last season. Our thoughts are with Ann and his daughters Melanie, Abigail and Hannah. A memorial service will be held soon.

The last match of the season saw the Third team defeat Hemel 4 by 3 - 2. Unfortunately, we cannot avoid relegation.

The Second team have finished up as runners up in Division 2. An excellent achievement.

The Third team lost their last away game of the season at St Albans 5.

The Second team finished the season the same way they started it with a 4.5 - 0.5 win over Hertford 4.

Another exciting match in the Middlesex League saw us win by 5 - 3 against Hendon 2 and secure promotion to Division 2 at the first attempt. That wraps up the season in that league.

There was a thrilling match between Potters Bar and Barnet Knights at Little Heath. The final result was 4 - 4. It looks as if Hendon could equal our points total if they beat us next Thursday (20th).

The First team had a tough match against Barnet 1. Final score 1 - 4.

Potters Bar travelled up the road to Finchley and defeated a strong Barnet Knights team by 4.5 - 3.5. The situation in the Middlesex League Division 3 is becoming very interesting!

The Second team hold a 4 - 0 advantage over Hemel 3.

The First team continue to march towards Division 1 with a 4 - 1 victory over Letchworth 1.

Drama as the First Team top Division 2 after defeating Stevenage 1 by 3.5 - 1.5

The Third team drew their Division 6 home match against WelwynHatfield 3.

The Second team gained a welcome victory over Letchworth 2 by 3.5 - 1.5

The First team had a surprise walkover when Hemel 2 couldn't raise a team for their Division 2 home match.

Our UK Chess Challenge event was jointly won by Darius Faiz-Mahdavi, Jonathan Davies and Edward Little who will play off for the trophy. Thanks to everyone who took part in our Chess Week activities.

The First team scored an important victory over Hertford 2 by 3-2. Four games were drawn with Paul Williams gaining the all-important win. Details here.

Potters Bar drew 4 - 4 against an evenly matched Hendon 2.

More defaults by opponents as Potters Bar defeat Hackney 2 by 5.5 - 2.5

Potters Bar finally met King's Head over the board and won 7.5 - 0.5.

The Third team secured an important win over Barnet 3 by 4 - 1.

Potters Bar had a walkover against King's Head 3 when the hosts had a problem with their venue.

In Division 2 the First team defeated Letchworth 1 with a great performance.

The Second team hold the advantage in their home match against Hemel 3. The current score stands at 2.5 - 1.5 with Ronan's game to be concluded.

Potters Bar lost a close match at Metropolitan 2 by 4.5 - 3.5.

Victories by Mark Topham and Mark Uniacke gave the First team victory over Watford by 3 - 2. Details here.

Almost sixty players took part in our annual Christmas Fun Tournament. Christmas Champion is Darius Faiz-Mahdavi and Chief Elf is Alistair Hunter. Results Juniors and Adults/Stronger Juniors. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and many players went away with prizes. See you next year!

Potters Bar lost 4.5 - 3.5 at West London. A disappointing result not helped by defaulting a board due to illness.

The First team match at Watford 2 stands at 1 - 2 following two draws and a defeat. The Third team lost at Billy Lows Lane to St Albans 5 by 4 - 1.

The Third team achieved a creditable draw at WelwynHatfield whilst the Second team lost 2 - 3 at home to Barnet 2.

There was an exciting match for Potters Bar against Metropolitan 2 that finished in the last seconds by 4-4. Meanwhile the Little Heath U100 team lost by 3 - 1 to Hertford at Billy Lows Lane. 

Two tough matches this week. Hertford beat us at Little Heath by 5.5 - 0.5 in the Russell. It wasn't as one-sided as all that though. The Third team lost 3-2 at home to Rothamsted.

The First team had another tough match this time at home to Hemel 2. Three matches remain unresolved with Hemel leading 2- 0.

The Second team had a battle at Letchworth with the match standing at 2.5 - 1.5 against.

A better night for the First team at Hertford. Score stands at 1.5 - 1.5 with equal positions in the two outstanding games.

The Third team lost at Barnet by 3.5 - 1.5

On the move! The Thursday club will meet at King Charles The Martyr Church Hall, Mutton Lane, Potters Bar from 3rd November. No change on Wednesdays.

The First team lost 1 - 4 at home to Barnet 1 but there were some encouraging signs and on another day the result may have different. Details here.

The Third team bounced back with a 4 - 1 win over St Albans 6 in the first match at Billy Lows Lane.

The First team lost 4.5 - 0.5 at Stevenage 1 with Martin Likeman scoring the half point. It looks tough in Division 2.

The Second team gained an emphatic 4.5 - 0.5 win over Hertford 4 in their first match of the season. Details here

The Third team lost their first match of the season at Hemel by 3.5 - 2.5. Details here.

Potters Bar won their first match in the Middlesex League under slightly bizarre circumstances. Hackney 2 thought the match was over six boards instead of eight so we benefited from two defaults to win 4.5 - 3.5. Match details on the diary page.

The club has been elected to the Middlesex League where we will play as Potters Bar.

Summer Tournament results.

The club Senior Player of the Year is Steve Dicks and the Junior Player of the Year is Edward Little. Both these awards were well deserved.

Gary Senior won the Summer tournament with 6/6, David Phillips was top junior and second outright with 5/6 and Shyamel Patel was third outright with 4.5 points.

In the last action of the season the Third team beat Letchworth 4 by 3.5 to 1.5 and Chris draws his outstanding game against WelwynHatfield 3. This means the Second team finish second in Division 5 level on points with Welwyn and the Third team third in Division 7 just one point behind Letchworth 4.

The Third team defeated Letchworth 6 by 5 - 0 but appear to have lost their chance for promotion.

One of the greatest musicals is being put on locally.

Both the Second and Fourth teams finished their seasons with walkovers against Watford 5 and Stevenage 4 respectively. This means that the Second team are guaranteed at least second place and the Fourth team may finish mid-table.

The Second team match at Welwyn 3 stands at 2.5 - 1.5 against us so we need a win from the last game.

The Third team played well at Lower Red Lion eventually losing by 3.5 - 1.5 but it could've been very different. A good win for Edward and a well played draw by Michael Chesworth.

Champions! The First team won their last match of the season to take the Division 3 title.

The Fourth team gained their second win of the season at Letchworth 5 by 3 - 2.

The First Team travelled to Stevenage for their penultimate match of the season returning with a win - despite some nervous moments.

The end of a busy week saw the Third team win 3 - 2 at home to Letchworth 5.

The First team defeated WelwynHatfield 2 by 3-2. Two matches left!

The Fourth team lost narrowly to Hertford 5.

The Fourth team played well but lost 4 - 1 to Lower Red Lion.

The Second team had an early finish defeating Borehamwood by 3.5 - 1.5.

The Second Team stay top of Division 5 after defeating Hoddesdon 2 by 3.5 - 1.5.

The First suffered a second defeat of the season by Barnet 1.

The Third team won at Stevenage by 3 - 2.

The Second team defeated Watford 5 by 4 - 1.

The First team achieved an important victory at St Albans by 3 - 2.

The Fourth team lost a 'double-header' 3 - 2 to Letchworth 6.

The Second team won an important victory over Rothamsted by 3.5 - 1.5.

The Third team battled to a drawn match at Hertford.

The Third team, with three juniors, overwhelmed Letchworth 6 by 5 - 0.

The First Team scored a comfortable 4 - 1 victory over Royston 2.

The Second team returned to winning ways with a 4.5 - 0.5 win at St Albans. Steve was unable to convert his play-on game to a win so the Third team lost their match against Letchworth 4.

There were heavy defeats to Royston in the Russell by 0.5 - 5.5 and Letchworth by 1 - 3 in the Under 100 competition. No cup competitions to distract any of us now so we can concentrate on the league.

A weakened Second team lost their home match to WelwynHatfield 3. Ted Turner drew on board 5 with everyone else losing apart from Chris who has good prospects in his board 1 game.

A bit of an odd week competitively. The Third team currently stand at 1.5 - 1.5 in their match against Letchworth 4. Steve Dicks is apparently a pawn up but Mod's game is subject to dispute. Current position on diary page.

The Second team dropped their first point of the season drawing 2.5 - 2.5 with Letchworth 3. Details here

The New Year started with two 3.5 - 1.5 results on the same night. The First Team won against Stevenage 2 whilst the Fourth team lost to Letchworth 4.

Miss Radha Jain won the Christmas Tournament with a perfect 6 points. In the Adult / Stronger Junior section, Alistair Hunter and Martin Walker shared the honours and are both appointed Chief Elves. In the final match on 2004, the Third team lost at home to Lower Red Lion.

The First Team comprehensively defeated Hertford 3 by 0.5 - 4.5.

The Fourth Team scored another point drawing at Letchworth 4.

The Second Team continued their winning ways against Borehamwood by 3 - 2.

The Fourth team scored their first ever win defeating Hertford 5. Well done!

The First team achieved an important victory over WelwynHatfield 2 by 3 -2.

The Third team scored a comprehensive victory over Letchworth 5 by 4.5 - 0.5.

In two rearranged matches, the Fourth team gained their first point of the season drawing with Letchworth while the Second team match stands at 2 - 1 in our favour with good chances of a victory.

The Second team beat Hoddesdon 3 - 2 despite an early reverse and the Third team drew with Hertford 5.

The Fourth team lost 5 - 0 to a strong Lower Red Lion team. However, individual performances continue to be encouraging. Meanwhile the First team lost 4 - 1 to Barnet 1. Martin and Mark Topham drew their matches.

The Second Team chalked up their second win of the season defeating Letchworth 3. Details here.

The Fourth Team came very close to winning at Stevenage but lost 3 - 2. Details here.

Stevenage 4 have conceded their Division 7 match against the Third team as they couldn't raise a team.

The Third and Fourth teams clashed in their first Division 7 match. A very young team sprung some surprises on their older, experienced opponents. Edward Little turned down a draw offer and lost, Cameron Little achieved a draw, both games going to the wire. Garo, captain for the night, fought hard but lost, Richard Vivian won by default whilst the brother v sister clash saw Yvette defeat Luc. So a match that on paper looked totally one sided provided some excellent performances and excitement. Details here.

The First team marked their debut in Division 3 with a 3 - 2 victory at Royston 2. Details here.

Garo scored a perfect 6/6 in the Under 10 London Junior Qualifier at Roundwood school. Luc qualified for the Under 10 Minor final. Full details on the Herts website. At the same time Steve Dicks was battling away just down the road in the Bunce Cup. Although he was joint first he lost out to Matthew Beggs on tie-break. Again details on the Herts site.

The Second team started life in Division 5 with a win over Rothamsted. Details here.

On Thursday 30th September we started a Ladder competition at Brookmans Park.

There was success for two of our junior players in the Yorke Mead tournament. In a combined U9, U11 and U14 competition, Garo finished second whilst Luc was joint third and joint U9 winner.

LH&BP juniors enjoyed success at the Herts N&E congress. Garo won the U9 section, Edward won the U10 and Cameron the U13 section. Furthermore Edward, Garo, Richard and Lydia were the team winners representing Brookmans Park school. Well done all of you!

The final league tables show that the Second team has gained promotion to Division 6. Letchworth 3 won the Division.

The U100 team won their final against Barnet. Congratulations to Michael Chesworth and juniors Michael Turner, Daniel Fernandez and Yvette Cook.

Martin Likeman won his adjourned game against Hertford to achieve a 2.5 - 2.5 draw in the match.

Several of our juniors were successful at the second part of the Megafinal. Qualifiers include Michael Tomlinson (Supremo), Lydia Smith, Garo Heath, Edward Little, Daniel Hedison and Luc Cook. Fuller details on the Herts website.

The First Team completed their fixtures with a 3.5 - 1.5 victory over St Albans 5.

The club enjoyed success at the UK Chess Challenge Megafinal at Stevenage for the older age groups. Michael Turner won a Supremo title, Yvette and Catherine won Suprema titles. Cameron and George qualified for the Gigafinal. Full results on the Herts site

Our Summer tournament for juniors with a prize fund of £500 will take place on Friday 4th June 2004 at Little Heath. Full details will be published soon. Send an e-mail to receive further details.

The Second team have completed their fixtures and have a good chance of automatic promotion after defeating Watford 5 by 3.5 to 1.5.

The Sharp team drew their match with Hoddesdon 3 - 3 but lost out on board count. It was a close match and we nearly pulled off a victory.

In a busy week for the club, the First team suffered another reverse this time against Hertford 4. The score stands at 1.5 - 2.5 with Martin's game on Board 1 to be completed. The Third team played their final match at home against Royston and lost by 3 - 2. Well done to everyone who has played in the Third team this season. Next season will bring some success.

The Third team lost their penultimate match of the season by 4 - 1 but featured a good draw from Edward Little on his debut.
